Technology careers are built through layers of capability. Rather than trying to learn everything at once, identify the direction you are heading in and build the skills that direction requires, in order.

Stage 01 — Foundation

Build fundamental capability in:

  • Computer and digital literacy
  • Problem solving
  • Communication
  • Logical thinking
  • Basic technology concepts

Stage 02 — Core technical skills

Choose a direction, then follow its sequence.

Development

Programming → web → applications → full stack

Data

Data fundamentals → SQL → analytics → visualisation → advanced data work

Testing

Testing fundamentals → automation → testing tools → quality engineering

Cloud

Cloud fundamentals → infrastructure → operations → deployment

AI

Programming and data fundamentals → AI concepts → machine learning → generative AI → applied AI

Stage 03 — Applied practice

Learn by building:

  • Small exercises
  • Practical applications
  • Automation workflows
  • Data projects
  • Technical experiments

Stage 04 — Portfolio

Document what you built. For each project, record:

  • The problem
  • Your approach
  • The technology used
  • Your own contribution
  • The result

Stage 05 — Career preparation

Prepare your:

  • Resume
  • Portfolio
  • Technical explanations
  • Interview fundamentals
  • Communication
  • Project walkthroughs

Stage 06 — Continuous development

Technology changes. Keep developing through projects, documentation, experimentation, structured learning and real problems.

Choose a direction first. Then build depth.
